NAPL Lauches “Senior Hours” to Support Community After Center Closure

In response to the permanent closure of the Northampton Senior Center, we are stepping in to provide a welcoming space for older adults who may be feeling the loss of a longtime community hub.

Beginning Monday, July 6, the library will introduce dedicated “Senior Hours” from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, Monday through Thursday, offering a familiar place for connection, conversation, and comfort.

The initiative comes at a critical time for local seniors. The Northampton Senior Center, which has served as a daily gathering place for decades, is scheduled to close on June 30 due to funding reductions impacting the county’s senior services network. Many seniors relied on the center not only for meals, but for companionship and routine—describing it as a “second home” and even “family.”

Library leaders say the new morning hours are designed to help fill that gap, even in a modest way.

We understand how important connection and routine are, especially right now. Our goal is to offer a space where seniors can continue to gather with familiar faces in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

During Senior Hours, the focus will be simple and intentional: social time. Participants are invited to reconnect with friends from the Northampton Senior Center, enjoy light refreshments, and ease into a new routine together.

The library will provide coffee, tea, water, and snacks, and attendees are encouraged to make full use of the space—whether that means chatting with friends, browsing the stacks, or settling in with a favorite book or magazine.

While the initial phase emphasizes informal gathering, we see this initiative as the first step in something larger.

Library leadership confirmed that they are actively seeking grants and community sponsorships to expand programming for older adults in the coming months. Potential future offerings could include gentle movement and wellness activities, health screenings and resource visits, and nutrition support initiatives such as Meals on Wheels partnerships.

Senior Hours at the Northampton Area Public Library are free and open to all older adults in the community. No registration is required.

As the community adjusts to change, the library hopes these morning gatherings will offer something simple—but powerful: a place to belong.
